TIPS ON CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING ENTERTAINMENT
There are many options to look at when choosing entertainment for your wedding. From our experience in speaking with couples, we have included a few points for your consideration.
Having the right music at your reception is essential to setting the mood and making sure you and your guests have fun. Whether you opt for a band or a DJ will largely depend on the style, theme or type of wedding reception you are planning. Live music provides beautiful vocals to inspire & entertain your guests as well as getting people energised and motivated for dancing. The art of integrating music into your wedding reception should be done so very subtly. As you and your guests commence the evening with pre-dinner drinks, softer slower ballad music is played, then gradually building to a crescendo with your bridal waltz – which opens the dance floor for the evening.
VENUE SIZE
It’s important to consider the size of your reception venue when choosing your entertainment. If you have space restrictions, find a musical group or DJ that can perform in that space whilst still producing a rich sound. A professional will know how to best utilise the room’s acoustics ensuring that you receive quality sound.
BUDGETING FOR LIVE BANDS
Your reception entertainment is one of the main highlights remembered by you and your guests. Consider this when budgeting for your wedding. If you’re looking to employ professional musicians you will need to allow for food and drink for the band too. Most wedding reception venues require you to provide the band members with at least one course (usually the main), whilst soft drinks are always a standard issue.
BOOKING YOUR ENTERTAINMENT
Once you make a decision on the type and style of music, your budget and your venue size, you will then set about the task of actually sourcing your entertainment.
Word of mouth from friends, family & venue owners is most often the best way to find a band. Listen to the band’s demo CD and read through a sample play list to give you an idea of their sound & capabilities. It’s a great idea to go to see the band play live to assess their suitability to your day.
Avoid disappointment and book your band early! Approximately 8– 12 months ahead ensures you get the best chance of securing the musicians you want! If you’ve not yet chosen your venue, ask if the band will make a tentative booking for you. Most bands will do this but only for a short time.
Overall & most importantly, when choosing your wedding entertainment, you need to feel at ease with your provider right from the start.
PAYING FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT
After you’ve discussed how your reception should flow and you feel confident with your choice, a deposit is usually required to secure your booking (usually around 20% of the total fee.) With the balance paid at your convenience (no later than the wedding day).
Happy wedding planning!
